National Data Opt-In/Opt-Out

In recent weeks we have had a number of queries from patients regarding the national data upload and options available to you regarding the ability to "opt-in" or "opt-out".

Type 1 Opt-Out prevents information being shared outside a GP practice for purposed other than direct care.

Type 2 Opt-Out prevents information being shared outside NHS Digital for purposed beyond the individual’s direct care. (known as National Data Opt-Out)

A Type 1 Opt-Out when recorded at the GP Practice should prevent identifiable information about a patient being extracted from their GP Record and uploaded to any other organisation for purposes other than their direct care.

How to Register Type 1 Opt-Out

If you do not want your identifiable data to be shared outside of the GP Practice for purposes except for your own care you can register an opt-out with the surgery. , NHS Digital have provided the attached form that can be used, which also helpfully has the codes for practices to record in EMIS.

Patients can opt out at any time, and they can change their mind. The same form can be used for either request.

Patient are advised to inform the GP practice by 23rd June to allow time for processing as their Opt-Out will need to be recorded on the practice system by 30th June.

This is not to be confused with National Data Opt-Out (Type 2 Opt-Out)

This should not be confused with National Data Opt-Out (previously known as Type 2 Opt-Out) this is information from all NHS Organisations, e.g. hospitals and local authorities patients can opt-out online, by post and phone, details for this can be found here again patient can change their mind at any time.

You can click this link, print it off and complete your type 1 option in paper form (if this is more suitable to you). Forms are also available for collection from the practice reception during business hours.

Please DO NOT phone the practice with your choices, as telephone lines are currently extremely busy with unwell patients trying to make contact. If you attend the practice for another reason, please feel free to make the team aware of your preference.
